Columbia, Missouri

Mizzou Columns - Columbia MissouriColumbia is home to the University of Missouri, a.k.a "Mizzou". Mizzou is by far the largest employer in the area with more than 13,000 full-time employees.

History: Osage and Missouri Indians roamed parts of the area prior to the Lewis and Clark expedition in the 1800ís. The settlement name started as Smithton. However, due to lack of water, the founders moved east across the Flat Branch and renamed it to Columbia in 1812. Columbia was incorporated in 1892.

Columbia has seen its population double since 1980, and Boone County has seen a similar trend. The City of Columbia has a council/manager form of government.

Columbia is Boone Countyís largest population center and received numerous national awards and recognitions. Because of the close proximity of the cities and town within Boone County, residences are able to enjoy all the amenities available throughout the area.


The average cost of living in Columbia is constantly below the national average.

Columbia has more exemplary public schools per capita than any city in the nation according to the U.S Department of Education.

The annual rainfall is approximately 39.43 inches per year. The annual snowfall is approximately 20.7 inches per year. August, the warmest month averages a temperature of 79.1 degrees. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 25.5 degrees.

The 2006 Census Bureau estimated the Columbia population at 94,428.
